Discovering Camping in the Smokies

Back country in the SmokiesMany opportunities are available for camping in the Smokies. There are all types of camping in the Smokies from RV parks, tent camping, and primitive sites. The “front country” camping grounds and “back country” camping grounds are located in the Smoky Mountains National Park. Front country camping has a small fee but back country camping is free. The difference between them is that front country camping is close to the road and has grills, restrooms, running water and individual picnic tables.

Back country camping you must hike with your supplies to the remote site.
RV campgrounds are available in Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, and Cherokee, North Carolina. The RV campgrounds are all outside the National Park.
 
A campground which you could settle in while vacationing in the Smokies is “Camping in the Smokies.” This campground is conveniently located near Gatlinburg which has amusement parks, dining and shopping available for your convenience along with the outdoor activities at the camp. Jellystone Park Campground and Resort in Cherokee, North Carolina is another one. It has campsites and cabin rentals.

They are close to Mingo Falls, Cherokee Indian Reservation, also with
horseback riding and tubing available. Car camping is another term used for front country camping. There are campsites available at Elkmont and Smokymont from May 15th to October 31st.  Cades Cove is available year round and is reported to be one of the most popular campsites in the Smoky Mountains National Park. As you can see there are a lot of opportunities for camping in the Smokies.
